Greener. Smarter. Better.

Ab Boxley"Corporate stewardship is the cornerstone of our business philosophy at Boxley," said Ab Boxley, President and CEO. "We are citizens of each of the communities we serve and our employees take pride in enhancing quality of life through community service and environmental stewardship as well as providing the region with quality aggregate, block and concrete."

Environmental stewardship is about recognizing nature is the infrastructure of our communities. We accept our civic obligation to conduct our business in a manner that will sustain the environment for generations to come.

Environmental Efforts

Green Team - Boxley's Mission/Vision and Core Beliefs state that we are responsible stewards for the environment. Our Green Team works to establish best practices and procedures to take advantage of new technology and techniques that allow us to make environmentally sensitive decisions.

Sustainable Practices - 2009 Sustainability Report

Sustainability is a priority of Boxley. We are serious about our core belief to be responsible stewards of the environment.

There are numerous federal and state agencies that regulate us. We try to do a better job than they required because we know that our best regulator is what is best for the environment.

Our "Green Team" examines various strategies to help Boxley become a greener company and a leader in resource conservation.

  • Comprehensive Recycling Program - Over 200 tons of metal and thousands of gallons of used oil from equipment and parts, as well as aluminum cans, paper and plastics.
  • Timber Management - Timber management is the key to a healthy forest. Management techniques include fertilization, harvesting, pest control, regeneration and tree improvements.
  • Reclamation Practices - Reclamation projects typically require establishment of stable, functional ecosystems. This demands an in-depth understanding of plant communities and how they interact with the physical environment over the long-term.
  • "Carbon Footprint" Monitoring - A carbon footprint is "the total set of GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions caused directly and indirectly by an individual, organization, event or product" (UK Carbon Trust 2008). Develop data and metrics to measure GHG. The mitigation of carbon emissions through the development of alternative projects such as solar or wind energy or reforestation, represent ways of managing a carbon footprint.
  • Grounds/Habitats - Examine more ways for natural assets to be tended in a more sustainable manner.
  • Transportation - Study feasibility of increasing fuel efficiency in company cars and equipment.

Caring for the Environment

Boxley proudly supports projects that enhance the quality of life in the communities we serve, and protect and preserve the environment.

Our Explore the Earth program introduces kids to the Earth's geologic wonders and highlights the importance of environmental protection and reclamation.

Boxley's Good Neighbor Policy outlines our standards for being a neighbor to those who live or work near one of our facilities.

Our Natural Resource Management Activities outline what our responsibilities as a natural resource company must be to effectively protect our natural environment.

What is LEED?

Since its inception in 1998, The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), provides a set of standards for environmentally sustainable construction.

Of the six major areas of the LEED rating system Boxley focuses on Materials and Resources. This website will provide you with much of the information you need to meet LEED certification requirements.
